District 3830 Shines in RI Confab

The Asia Pacific Breakfast Meeting during the RI Convention was held June 16 at Sheraton Hotel, Downtown, LA. A record 700 Rotarians from Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Singapore, Hongkong, Macau, Malaysia, Taiwan, India, Pakistan and the Philippines joined the meeting which led Pres. Wilf Wilkinson to comment that this was among the most diverse group of attendees he has joined for a breakfast meeting. A large contingent of Filipino Rotarians attended the event.

Specials guests of honor were RI President Wilf Wilkinson, several Past RI Presidents and spouses, incumbent RI Directors including Monty Audenart who was RIPR at our DISCON and spouse Liz and a number of other RI dignitaries.

Past RI President Mat Caparas of the the Philippines, who was the featured speaker spoke about “Women in Rotary.” He said that the entry of women into Rotary has made it possible for Rotary to grow to the 1.2 million force that it is today. “With their skills in multi-tasking, women have enhanced the capacity of Rotary Clubs to undertake effectitve service projects.”

Sharing President Pepito Bengzon of RC Makati ably emceed the program together with PDG Pauline Leung. PRID Paeng Hechanova delivered the welcome remarks.

Through the initiative of PDG Vince Carlos, the Philippine District Governors, some Rotarians and their spouses performed a colorful 3-dance medley for the audience: the Suyuan courtship dance, the Estudiantina, a paseo of ladies with their books, and the Jota Manileña, a brisk dance with castanets. The Philippine dances was followed by a brisk and lively Taiwan’s tribal dance.

Other Sharing Presidents spotted at the breakfast meeting were Wash Roqueza and spouse Anna, Ed Espedido, Areta Justado, Cecile Twitt, Doris Ensomo, Baby Tejada, and Elynn Gorra.


District 3830 participants in the dances “Suyuan” included : Gov. Ato Magadia and spouse Vicky, DGN Sid Garcia and spouse Tesha, SP Joe Reaño and spouse Choi, and SP Rico Ocampo & spouse PP Rachel.


La Jota Manileña dancers included : SP Tess Filoteo, PP Patti King, PP Lilibeth dela Cruz, and Spouses Choi Reaño and Daisy dela Torre.
