RCM Pasong Tamo Shares Books

President’ Report
July 2, 2009
Rey Gonzales (RC Makati Pasong Tamo)

The long wait is over. I am very eager to make this Rotary year of service an exciting and memorable one.

Of course, I cannot do this alone and will expect the help and full support of my officers, directors and members.

We will all aspire to make a difference in the lives of countless impoverished Filipinos. Together we can achieve much! Let us be more active and live a life of purpose!

We actually started very early this year. We had the signing of the Sisterhood Club Agreement with the Rotary Club of Dumaguete which was also celebrating its 70th year in Rotary.

It was a night of fun, singing and dancing. Of course, we had a special number and gifted them with a song and the CD of the new Rotary Theme song entitled “The Future of Rotary is in your hands”. We extended the hand of friendship and conveyed the message that we in RCMPT District 3830 are their partners and will support their projects as well.

The highlight of the trip to Dumaguete was our visit to our adopted school, the Palinpinon Elementary School, Valencia, Negros Oriental. We made it a point to go to the school (with a population of 283 students) early so we can see the children and how the school functions during school time. We were welcomed with open arms and I cannot describe in words the joy I saw in the faces of the children, their parents and teachers. They told me that “we were hulog ng langit “ (We descended from the heaven to answer their prayers). No group has every visited their school and for us to go back there for the second straight year made them feel that we truly care for them. Our monetary donation last year was well spent. Cassette players, a computer and other equipment were shown to us and the head teacher/principal, Ms Teresita Olasiman narrated to us how happy and eager the children were everytime they use the machines . Every afternoon, the small library gets filled up with students who listened to the educational audio materials. They were all thirsty for knowledge and RCMPT have quenched their thirst and will continue to do so.

With the help of the Books Across the Seas Program of the Rotary Club of Makati, Brother’s Brother Foundation and Allied Bank, we were able to donate to them 500 brand new books. The teachers wasted no time in browsing over the books and they reported to us that the books were perfect and will be very useful for them and the children of Palinpinon Elementary School. We shall definitely return to Dumaguete!
